Google is planning to test a broadband Internet network with speeds vastly superior to what most of us use today, and the city of Richmond wants to be a part of it. City officials have formed a small committee to submit information to Google for consideration as one of the test sites. The network would provide everyone in the city with access to the Internet with speeds of more than 1 gigabit per second.

There is a good reason for this since the plan is primarily focusing on boosting broadband adoption and quality in the consumer market. But while there isn't any direct plan to boost enterprise IT networks, businesses may find themselves benefitting indirectly from a lot of the proposed policies in the plan. The most obvious example of this comes from the fact that increased broadband speeds and deployment will increase workers' ability to effectively telecommute.

The net neutrality debate sometimes is framed as a struggle over the "future of the Internet" or "freedom of speech" or the First Amendment. It really isn't. On a panel at the Comptel convention this week, Andy Schwartzman, Media Access Project CEO said it was, but also agreed with Rick Whitt, Google telecom and media counsel, and Robert Quinn, AT&T SVP, that all their groups and companies agreed that the FCC ( News - Alert ) 's "Internet Freedoms" principles are not at issue.

Two services the FCC provides for Internet users to measure their connection speeds give dramatically different results. Federal authorities are taking a kind of national census of broadband Internet access speeds -- a nifty idea that could be a huge help in breaking the United States out of the high-speed slow lane. But, as you'll see, good luck finding a speedometer that works.

INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDER Virgin Media is set to showcase its 200Mbps broadband service at the Ideal Home Show in London over the next week. Of course it's going to be a while before the majority of customers to get access to such a service, but the company has been trialling it in Kent since last year, with additional trials just starting in Coventry. The company will also be showing off some of the stuff people who have one of these magical connections will be able to do, including streaming 3DTV an

The relationship of broadband to economic growth is perfectly clear. Broadband, or high-speed Internet access, stimulates job growth, allows small businesses to expand their markets, creates educational opportunities and allows the creation of economic wealth to thrive. A series of recent studies funded by Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska and Leelanau counties identified that fewer than 60 percent of households within the four-county region have access to high-speed Internet service.

Industry players have welcomed the lowering of costs for broadband in SA after MWEB announced its uncapped service. While OpenWeb welcomed the news of uncapped broadband, it was quick to differentiate between what it saw as two types of offerings in the South African market. "The market is now separated by two types of providers: The Low Cost Provider, whom provides a service that enforces a high contention ratio, with the quality of their access reliant on other users, and the Business Class provider

If we compare South Africa to Kenya for example, both countries have approximately 10% internet penetration.   -Stephen Newton
